Sri Lalitha Sahasranamam

Sri Lalitha Sahasranamam is the only Sahasranamam, which does not repeat itself. Its language is ornate, with abundant alliteration, but the text contains many hidden strings of mantras and messages. Sri Lalitha Sahasranamam can be chanted in two different ways. One in Sthotra form and the other in mantra form. In the Sthotram form, all 1,000 names are separated into sthotrams of a few names each and recited in this way. In the mantra form, each name is said individually, preceded by "Om" and followed by "Namah". When chanted in mantra form, the endings of each name are generally changed to "e" or "yai". Mantra form is commonly used to recite Lalitha Sahasranamam during archana. Both ways, however, are equally effective.

Meaning of the Dhyana (continued)
Sakumkumalepana –malikachumbi-Kasthurikam,
Samanda hasithekshanam sashra chapa pasangusam,
Asesha jana mohinim –maruna malya bhoosham bara,

Meditate on her,
Who applies saffron on her body,
Who applies musk attracted by bees on her,
Who has a beautiful smile,
Who has with her bows, arrows and Pasangusa,
Who attracts all the souls,
Who wears red garland,
Who wears ornaments great,
And who is of the colour of the red hibiscus.

Karthikai Deepam

Kartikai Deepam is the lighting of lamps on the Krittika or Kartika Nakshataram day in Tamil Nadu and Kerala in Karthigai month. There are several reasons or stories behind observing Karthigai Deepam. A popular belief is that the day is the birthday of Lord Muruga. The lamps are also lit for a happy married life and for the well being of children in the family. Another legend associated with Karthigai Deepam is that King Bali surrendered before Lord Vishnu. King Bali attained moksha by surrendering all his wealth and himself before Lord Vishnu. Special offerings made from puffed rice and beaten rice is believed to be due to this legend. Another popular legend associated with that of Karthigai Deepam is that of Lord Shiva appearing in the form of Lingodhbhava – a pillar of fire with no end and beginning. This is celebrated at the famous Tiruvannamalai Arunachaleswar Temple as the Thiruvannamalai Deepam. May this Karthikai Deepam usher in all prosperity and peace to all.

Sri Lalitha Sahasranamam

On receiving a divine command from Sri Lalitha Devi Herself, the ashta or eight Vak devathas composed Sri Lalitha Sahasranamam. These Vak devathas are Vasini, Kameshwari, Aruna, Vimala, Jayinee, Modhinee, Sarveshwari and Koulini. Sri Laitha Sahasranamam says that "One can worship Sri Lalithambika only if She wishes us to do so". Everything happens on Her will only. Sri Lalitha Sahasranamam is in the form of a dialogue between Sri Hayagriva, an avatar of Sri Mahavishnu and Agastya Maharishi. The temple of Sri Lalithambika at Thirumeeyachur, near Kumbakonam is said to be the place where Agastya Maharishi was initiated into Sri Lalitha Sahasranamam. Another version is that the Upanishad Bramham Mutt at Kanchipuram is the place where this initiation happened. Meaning of the Dhyana (continued): Dyayeth padmasanastham vikasitha vadanam padma pathrayathakshim, Hemabham peethavasthram karakalitha-lasadhema padmam varangim, Sarvalangara yuktham sathatham abhayadam bhaktha namram bhavanim. Meditate I do, On her who sits on a lotus, On her who has a smiling face, On her who has long eyes like the lotus leaf, On her who glitters like gold, On her who wears red cloths, On her who has a golden lotus in her hand, On her who grants all desires, On her who is dressed with perfection, On her who gives protection, On her who has soft heart to her devotees, On her who is Sri vidya , On her who is forever peaceful, On her who is worshipped by gods, And on her who gives all wealth. Quote of the Day

The Guru is Brahman Himself. He is an ocean of bliss, knowledge and mercy. He is the captain of your soul. He is the fountain of joy. He removes all your troubles, sorrows and obstacles. He shows you the right divine path. He tears your veil of ignorance. He makes you immortal and divine. He transmutes your lower, diabolical nature. He gives you the rope of knowledge and saves you when you are drowning in this ocean of Samsara. Do not consider him to be only a man. If you take him as a man, you are a beast. Worship your Guru and bow to him with reverence.
